During the 17th century there were only a few harpsichord makers in Germany. Most of the harpsichords were imported from the Low Countries, Italy and England. The German keyboard makers were primary organ builders who made in addition harpsichords and clavichords. Only a few early German harpsichords survived. Some of them are extraordinary just like the Johann Mayer harpsichord. The original is in Carolino-Augusteum Museum in Salzburg, Austria.
