RDS-1 is the first Soviet atomic bomb, was 3.7 m long, 1.5 m wide, weighed 4.6 tons and had a TNT equivalent of 22 kilotons. The nuclear explosion was triggered by an automated system that ensured the explosion occurred at the necessary point on its trajectory. The successful test of the first Soviet nuclear bomb was performed at 7:00 AM on 29 August 1949 at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakh SSR. The testing of RDS-1 was supervised by Yulii Khariton.
